Chinese PC Makers Shower Microsoft with Big Orders

By Li Xinran

China's four largest computer companies will sign more than US$700 million worth of contracts with Microsoft soon, the largest amount since Microsoft started doing business in China, Beijing News reported today.

Tongfang is expected to sign a framework memorandum agreement with Microsoft today to join the "Genuine Windows Experience Program," which will cost the company US$120 million worth of software programs.

Next Wednesday, Founder, China's second largest PC maker, will reach an agreement with MS to buy US$250 million worth of software.

Lenovo, China's largest and the world's third largest PC company, will "sign an even bigger deal with Microsoft," the newspaper said. TCL will spend US$60 million on Microsoft programs.

Lenovo and Founder will also sign contracts with MS individually as strategic cooperative partners in the Pacific region. Tongfang and TCL will sign their purchasing contracts together with China Mobile and Construction Bank of China.
Microsoft software is popular in China, but many Chinese users bought pirated versions, which made it an issue for Sino-US trade negotiations.
